CARLTON POWER SECURES GOVERNMENT BACKING TO DEVELOP TRAFFORD GREEN HYDROGEN PROJECT

Carlton Power, one of the UK’s most experienced energy infrastructure development companies, has secured the UK Government’s support to build a green hydrogen hub at the Trafford Low Carbon Energy Park in Greater Manchester. The 200MW facility, the largest consented green hydrogen project in the UK, will meet the needs of local industry and transport operators who wish to make the switch from fossil fuels.

Subject to final agreements with Carlton Power, the Government will provide financial support to the first phase of the Trafford project (15-20MW) through its Hydrogen Business Model process, which aims to stimulate the growth of the hydrogen economy across the UK.

Subject to a final investment decision, Carlton plans to start construction of its Trafford Green Hydrogen project later this year, and for it to enter commercial operation in 2025.  It will produce and store hydrogen at scale and help integrate renewable energy on a regional scale through the storage of solar and wind energy.

The first phase of the Trafford Green Hydrogen scheme is likely to create around 200 construction jobs and create up to 10 full-time operational jobs with future phases to be constructed in response to demand for hydrogen in the region.

Carlton Power has taken forward the project with the support and involvement of a local consortium, comprising Manchester Metropolitan University, Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), Trafford Council, Cadent Gas and Electricity North West, and with the public support of local politicians including Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andrew Western MP and Cllr Tom Ross, leader of Trafford Council (pictured).

Eric Adams, Hydrogen Projects Director at Carlton Power said: “We are delighted by this news.  We are hugely grateful for the support given to the project by local stakeholders. Everyone could see that Trafford Green Hydrogen will be a catalyst for inward investment and the development of the hydrogen economy in Greater Manchester. Today’s decision will encourage industry and transport operators in Greater Manchester area to embrace the energy transition and Net Zero with confidence.”

In addition to its green hydrogen project, Carlton Power is also examining other types of energy schemes to be situated within the ca. 12 hectare Trafford Low Carbon Energy Park.  When built, Trafford Green Hydrogen will be located next to one of Europe’s largest energy storage facilities based on liquid air storage: the 250MWh Carlton Highview Power project (announced in June 2020).
