Trafford Power Project
On 1 April 2010, Wainstones Energy Ltd. (WEL), a Carlton Power group company, secured consent under Section 36 of the Electricity Act 1989 for a 1520 MW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) project. This consent was subsequently amended in 2014 and again in 2016, ultimately resulting in permission to develop a 1931 MW CCGT project.
Although development was started on the project, electricity market drivers, project economics and a changing political landscape have meant that it is now more challenging to develop and operate a CCGT project at the proposed location.
A variation to the Section 36 Consent is therefore now being sought from the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) to reduce the overall capacity of the project to 1200 MW, using either open cycle gas turbine (OCGT) or reciprocating gas engine (RGE) units, which are capable of hydrogen firing.
